On the eve of the winter solstice I rest in the rocking chair taking in the beauty of a snow sparkled wonderland beckoning through the picture window. This time of year invites reflection and celebration in honor of our spirit. Christmas, Hanukkah, and Yule all and together utilize the beauty of light, whether it be candles or colorful holiday lights - to remind us of the Divine and bring a delighted sparkle to our lives. Happy Winter Holidays to you - may your days be filled with love, friendship and magic.
I have the distinct opportunity to be included in the Matthew Fox Blog Tour for his newest literary gift to the world - Confessions: The Making of a Post-Denominational Priest. And, as Matthew Fox was born on the Winter Solstice, I will begin by wishing him a very Happy Birthday. I am already a major fan of Matthew's work and have many of his offerings on my own bookshelf. I have cited extensively from his book Creativity: Where the Divine and Human Meet in my doctoral research on the intersection between the process of art making and the pursuit of spirituality as a means of activism against oppression. I consider Matthew Fox a living hero as he suffered tremendous oppression within patriarchal structures yet continues to hold the shining light for all. I have found his words, insights and perspective on the world to be inspiring, refreshing and thought provoking. True to form, Confessions is another masterpiece which sheds light on how his journey shaped his visionary and powerful activism in the world.
Matthew's writing entices my imagination by creating images that weave their way into a complex and beautiful tapestry reflecting the multidimensional experiences and his interconnectedness with others that he so eloquently shares. He artfully combines his 'voice' with his talent at sharing his soul through beautiful poetry in a way that few others match. "One story I enjoy telling about angels is that of the woman whose depression was cured when Original Blessing hit her on the head in a bookstore and she took it home to read. A man told me a similar story, and the book that hit him in the head was my long work on Meister Eckhart, Passion for Creation. (Actually, the book is so large it could have hurt him.) He had heard neither of Eckhart nor me, but took the book home and it was just what he needed to help lift him out of his depression. What conclusion do I draw from these and other similar stories? That angels are hanging out in bookstores throwing books from above at sincerely questing readers." (pg. 391) I venture to say that he also has a sense of humor to be reckoned with.
Matthew Fox, in my most humble opinion, is to be commended for his positive contribution to a change in global culture; one that offers much deserved recognition for spirituality, art, beauty, nature, women and love, among many other profound ideas of a world order immersed in peace and acceptance. In other words, the work of Matthew Fox is about creating a change in consciousness. I won't give you a spoiler alert as I just can't risk ruining the delight his story offers. However, I will most certainly give the highest recommendation possible - read the book! I promise you will find a tale of adventure, spirit and transformation. Matthew Fox is the Divine and reflects the light of the season.
